Welcome to Medical School

I heard this shocking story on NPR yesterday.
With the sound of chainsaws in the background, they were sawing away the bones in the skull to dissect the brains of their cadavers in the last part of Medical school's required tasks.

What I found out was, they look on the outside, and are taught early on to take an almost barbaric like approach in dealing with the human body.
I have often heard time and time again, "it will be a simple surgery", and then what the paitent does not know, is the horrific pain involved nor the time it often takes to fully recover. I have heard the Dr.'s lack of feeling when operating and finally know why it is now. They are taught not to feel.
Rather than following the " do no harm " motto, they reverse it and almost go by the opposite. They start out destroying life and feel no remorse in doing so. Think about the sacredness of your body and having a young, slightly ignorant student slowly dissecting you, debasing you until there was nothing left but discards, welcome to the new dark age= Modern Medicine.

All Things Considered

Gross anatomy students at the University of Maryland Medical School are nearing final exams, and as they unwrap their cadavers on one of the last days in the lab, it's clear that a lot of work has been done this semester. Legs and arms have been dissected down to the bone. Internal organs are gone. And as NPR's Melissa Block discovers in the second of a series about the end of life and the gift of teaching, the students themselves have changed.

"We're definitely a lot more comfortable with the body," student George Kochman says. "We've have manhandled and had to flip the body and move the body and stick [our] hands in various cavities."

Most of the students share this confidence, working far less tentatively than they did on the first day. They've learned a great deal from the cadavers, and they say they've owed it to the donors to make the most of their time in the lab.
