ccApp.exe - security risks?
Off and on for many months I've been wondering just a bit about this program, due mostly to the occasions that my system was slow to reboot/restart because the shutdown process was slowed, this due to ccApp.exe being hung. Since then I've found out a bit about this, at least, I found out and read lots of information about this program being a part of Norton and is critical for maintaining the monitoring of email and or virus security. So far, so good.
Part of the overall problem here is potentially two fold: 1) Norton/Symantec's program ccApp.exe seems to exhibit problems (IE> something along the lines of badly designed code) that they have or have not fixed depending on which of umpteen different platforms of Norton programs one may be using; 2) completely outside of #1, there may be a hack out there that is designed to insinuate itself as ccApp.exe and cause whatever problems and mischief from there that it is designed to. The purpose of this inquiry is mostly in regards to #2.
The reason for this post, and what I'd like to know is, out side of all the yada yada yada about ccApp.exe belonging to Norton, is anyone aware of any kind of known security problem caused by this same program; for instance, can anyone confirm that they know of a specific case where a given worm, trojan or virus had used or corrupted ccApp.exe as part of it's method for compromising a system?
All I can find so far sort of leads back to the yada yada yada scenario. The gist of this seems to be, if one inspects their computer and finds that there is only one copy of ccApp.exe, and if this copy is found resident at
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec (in a shared folder here), then there is probably no security problem.
Anyone?
Thanks.
