Staph infection in knee

My mother has has had three operations on her right knee. First to get a new one. Second (two years later) to figure out why it still was very painful. Result, staph infection so bad, it exploded all over the MD's and op room. It was cleaned up followed by weeks of intravenus Antibiotics . Third op, to repair the first op. Now, three or four month later, it appears the pain is the same as after the first op. Staph again?

Are there any alternatives out there to going through all this again? Any ideas born of real life experience?
