I've had an IUD for about eight years and think it's the best thing since, oh I don't know, lemonade. It made of plastic, sometimes with copper strips in it. I know there is a shorter term one that has hormones in it, which defeats the purpose of stopping the birth control but you can ask your doctor lots of questions about your options.
