Spinal cord injury
Agnes or Bob or anyone,
I have read the recent articles about MS and the approaches to healing from the symptoms and wanted to know if the neurological pain associated with a spinal cord injury could benefit from the same regimes for building the myelin-sheath?
A close friend of mine was injured 9 years ago (random act of violence and stabbed in the back) resulting in paralysis of the lower bowels, left leg and neurological pain that is unbearable at times (barometric pressure changes, stress, etc.).
He currently has to use suppositories daily to evacuate his lower bowels. He also uses laxatives of all kinds, herbal/synthetic.
For the neurological pain he has taken painkillers with horrific results in the form of constipation for days, nightmares to name a few. He has chosen to drink alcohol as a form of pain relief! (sometimes to the point of blacking-out!). I have suggested this is extremely harmful to his liver to no avail he continues as it is his only relief.
What I understand of the myelin-sheath is that sugar/alcohol depletes it - thus the nerves are more vulnerable and sensitive.
In the most recent curezone.com email article about MS there is incredible information about myelin and I am wondering if a similar regime for building the foundation could be the same for a person with spinal cord injury?
As for the lower bowel paralysis my question is, if herbal remedies seem work, is there a possibility that he could build the muscles or whatever to begin to have more regular elimination?
Finally, a question about the pain and is there any alternative ways to decrease this so he does not have to turn to alcohol?
