I use these recipes (they're very simple, and you can mix them and leave them in the shower for weeks:
Shampoo:
Mix approximately 2 Tablespoons 20 Mule Team Borax in 8 to 16 ounces of water. You can adjust based on how often you wash your hair. I keep it in a squeeze bottle in the shower. Just pour some on your hair (very watery, but does the trick) and just massage it through your hair and scalp. I have long thick hair, and it works fine. Rinse thoroughly.
Conditioner:
Mix about 1/4 teaspoon citric acid (get at health food store...sprouting section or http://www.drhuldaclark.com) in per pint of water. Pour onto hair after "shampooing" and rub it through. I keep a wide-tooth comb in the shower and comb it through my hair. Rinse thoroughly. I make mine a little stronger than this. About 1 tsp/pint.
You can adjust these recipes based on your own experience. My hair is the same as when I used the "expensive" shampoo and conditioner from the salon.
