Dental Cavity with Possibility of Root Canal - Need Advice

Hi,

I was refered to your website through a friend of mine. I think this is great website with a lot of info. Keep up the good work!! :) My problem is that I have a cavity under a filling of my molar on the right hand side of my mouth. I've been told by a dentist that there is a very good possibility I might need to have a root canal. Here are my questions:

1) Are there alternatives to a root canal?
2) Is there a way I can get rid of the cavity on my own using an alternative method?
3) Can I take something other than Ibuprofen to handle the pain I'm experiencing? (I'm getting little if any quality sleep cause of the pain.)
4) Last but not least - What should I be using to clean my teeth and gums in the long term? (ie type of toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.)

I would appreciate your help in this matter. Thanks.

Steve
