Re: Honey vs Maple syrup
Stanley Burroughs, who takes credit for
The Master Cleanse was totally opposed to eating honey. Those who follow his philosophy would say "NO" to using honey. However, other fasting experts like Bragg and Erhart used honey in their cleansing drinks years before Burroughs came on the scene. Bragg says honey is full of natural enzymes that would break down mucus. The overly processed Maple syrup had no enzymes left after hours of cooking to reduce the sap to syrup. It does contain trace minerals and, of course, is a source of concentrated
Sugar to provide energy. On the other hand, one might argue that raw honey, unless gathered fresh from the hive will have few living enzymes left after weeks or months of being bottled, even when unpasteurized. Basically, its your call. I tend to get very tired of Maple syrup and like to use honey, or my favorite, evaporated cane juice as the simple
Sugar source in my cleansing drinks. My advice is to experiment and see what works best for you; or alternate the sweeteners to give your cleanse a little variety. It the fresh lemon juice and cayenne that provides the real punch to the
Master-Cleanse drink, along with the fasting aspect of no solid foods. The sweetener, whatever you use, mostly provides energy and a few minerals and makes the drink more palatable.
By the way-my mother also used the lemon and honey drink for coughs and colds, my Dad added whisky to his drink and called it a "Toddy". I doubt that any fasting expert would approve of that though :)
P.S. Hot water is fine as long as it is not hot enough to kill the enzymes in the lemon juice.
