I'm 100% convinced the bible doesn't teach this, the bible is clear that unbelievers remain mortal and so therefore will die the second death, not be in a process of dying forever which doesn't even make sense considering they would never actually die according to the eternal conscious torment teaching. So because I have no doubt ECT teaching is false and not what the scriptures teach, I think this teaching is one of the most horrific misrepresentations of God:

Of course Johnathan Edwards is just one of countless in the past who taught this and there are countless still today who teach it. It is by no means rare. It is still the teaching of the majority of the church as far as I know. That doesn't make it any less wrong, but it certainly has confused true believers who often automatically accept this teaching, without much thought or study on their own, assuming it is right because it has been the traditional teaching for so long.
