Re: Herbalist Dr John Ray Christopher and diabetes - advice and diet
Hi I've just discovered this forum and find it pretty informative - especially the dietary stuff. The article you've copied appears to apply to Type II diabetes, however, so it may or may not be helpful to your friends. (Why not just direct them to this forum? As the mother of a type I diabetic I can tell you that unasked for advice is not always welcome, no matter how well intentioned!)
When my son was diagnosed 12 years ago, I gave him chlorella and chromium picolinate as supplements. It did not "fix" him - surprise, surprise, but it did appear keep the amount of insulin he needed to a minimum. Now, at age 16 he seldom takes the supplements any more, but his insulin consumption is still quite low, even though he indulges a terrible sweet tooth. (My sis-in-law developed gestational diabetes and she was taking in a single dose an amount of insulin that would last my son 3 weeks!)
Another dietary item that may be of interest to readers here is the use of huckleberries. We live in an area where these are plenitful and every summer we would head for the hills and pick berries all day. I couldn't keep my son from stuffing himself with the berries, which I assumed would elevate his blood sugar. Much to my surprise, the berries did not cause high sugars - to the contrary they seemed to help keep it in the normal range. Unfortunately, they did not have the same effect after they had been frozen or cooked, and I should also stress that the berries did not seem to help much after the 'honeymoon' stage. Still, it might be worthwhile to experiment with the leaves in a tea or powder (something I didn't do). I've since learned that huckleberries are used by native americans for the beneficial effects with diabetes. The plants are closely related to blueberries, but I've no idea whether blueberries work the same way.
Just one more thing: I've read the threads pertaining to a "cure" for Type I and I'm intrigued about this. I'd be interested in hearing results from those who have tried the various diets. Any for-sure cures of type I out there???? (I don't want to see "I've read..." or "I heard from my aunt's cousin..." Has any diet cured YOU!???
Thanks to all.
