Heads up, or down?

I was walking through the basement of my grandparents house. It was unfurnished and the bare walls showed brick. Looking up I saw a circular area of exposed wood. In the center was the bottom of a toilet. No pipes, just the bottom of a commode that was about to fall through the surrounding wood.
