so since john wrote the revelation before he wrote his gospel, who then are the four living? is it matthew, mark, source M and source Q? are the first three a combination of those four and then johns gospel? was johns gospel written but not published?

one thing is for sure. what is said about the jews in the gospel of john could probably not have been published or otherwise widely distributed unto the fall of jerusalem. the jews were too powerful. and even so john got boiled in oil and survived, if you can imagine that.

According to Tertullian (in The Prescription of Heretics) John was banished (presumably to Patmos) after being plunged into boiling oil in Rome and suffering nothing from it. It is said that all in the audience of Colosseum were converted to Christianity upon witnessing this miracle.
