Can Iodine cause more harm than good on a mole?

I know this topic has come up many times-I have read tons of threads on it. I have a mole that looked like it got a little bigger. I decided to start applying Iodine on it and it has since gotten darker.

I wanted to see if it is possible that if you put Iodine on a mole that is maybe cancerous (mine is flat and brown) that it could make the cancer spread? I saw on WikiAnswers that if you apply Iodine to a melanoma it will make the cancer spread.

Is this True? Can you put Iodine on moles to prevent them from becoming cancerous and not just for removal?

Some clarity would be great!
