I think one key thing maybe that there needs to be enough co2. Many mammals that have elevated levels of co2 that live undergrounds have exceptionally long lifespans for their size and low cancer rates. Remember for oxygen to be deposited by the blood it must be swapped for co2...no co2 no swap(in that case you are limited to your cellular production of co2 which may be low in unhealthy people).
