Re: Anosmia / Loss of Sense of Smell

Here is something else for you to consider. The short version - have the function of your carotid ateries tested.

The long version, my past 7 years diary of symptoms that may be related to your condition, IE. my own experience & observations with 1) significant change ( loss) of my sense of smell & taste followed by 2) inability of mainstream medical to even offer advice, a diagnosis or guess as well as 3) no guidance from the alternative sector short of the most often recommended alternative remedy. *

In spring 2010, I finally succeeded in kicking a 30-plus year cigarette habit. During the first few weeks of quitting I anxiously looked forward to one of the telltale benefits from cessation of smoking; significant change ( improvement ) in taste/smell said to be especially prominent when ex smokers begin to notice a heightened sense in tasting the flavor of foods. Prior to quitting, my taste/smell had gradually decreased but worth noting that prior to quitting I still had a decent overall sense of smell / taste . By the time it got to be about the third week after giving up cigs, I came to realize my sense of smell & taste got worse, to the point that I generally could taste only the strongest flavors and smell only certain strong odors :(

As the next couple years passed I eventually bit the big one and did what I had grown reluctant to do; made an appointment with mainstream " family GP doctor" to give them a whack at diagnosing this condition. I wanted a diagnosis - educated determination of likely cause[s] of symptoms - not a prescription for pharma meds that may mask the symptoms while not addressing the underlying cause of symptoms.

Upon making an appt, said doktor examined me and had three suggestions: 1) schedule a full "work up" to include standard blood tests & colonoscopy ; 2) refer me to an ENT specialist; 3) he otherwise had no idea nor educated guess as to why / what was the cause of this condition or how to go about improving. I had the blood tests done but shunned the colon procedure largely based upon doc's admission he didn't have any strong sense of connecting loss of smell&taste to whatever may show up during the observation/filming of my low bowells. This was also partly based on my success with using alternative flushing protocols during the 10 years prior as well as regular bowell habits during same period.

The blood tests turned up nothing significant overall ( indicating any disease) and nothing soecifically regarding possible cause behind lost smell & taste. As a passing shot on this, GP doc totally avoided discussing my cholesterol levels, probably because it measured about 200, the last time same doc's office tested for this about 5 years prior it measured about 330 and I declined when that doc advised I begin a regular lipitor regimen ..... this doc probably did not want to know how I managed to lower 100-plus points without the use of standard issue statins.

ENT specialist did the sinus version of colonoscopy; he fished a length of fiber optic cable (attached to small camera) through nose to the air space between sinus and top of throat. He saw nothing to write home about, neither for general sinus problems for somebidy my age nor any clue that loss of sense & taste due to observable olfactory pathology.

This - the foregoing- was mainstream's opinion as of (approximately ) 4 years ago. Not much has changed since then as far as sense of smell & taste, it has not gotten worse ot better. However, I recently have noticed a worsening of other symptoms that have slowly been on my overall radar for many years. I will not further bore you with all of that other than mentioning that this recent situation caused me to suspect I have clogged or narrowing carotid arteries.

Think about this: it seems logical that anything/everything going on in the head that is dependent on sufficient flow of blood - to include normal operation of the systems that provide one's sense of smell & taste - is probably susceptible to a degree ( slight to severe, how to predict or diagnose? ) of malfunction if the carotids are compromised. Currently I no longer have access / coverage for mainstream medical doctor / service. If I did I would avail myself to a diagnosis since I know mainstream has for many years been able to fairly quickly/easily assess the blood flow through carotid arteries.

* as I understand it, the routine alternative recommendation and suggestion for anyone suffering any illness is, stop doing whatever may be causing me to have symptoms of illness, be it bad or improper choices in diet and or lifestyle, and replace with eating & drinking healthy - namely raw and low-cooked organic veggies and fruit while avoiding dairy & meat, and also getting necessary amount of rest and exercise.
