I believe you analyze the situation quite well. The idea of getting to the root of the problem is the best method, but having a psychotherapist rummage through your subconscious might be a bit surgery with an axe, but honestly I havent a lot of experience with that subject, tbh.
The idea that thoughts carry away by themselves, is hopeful, but that is the opposite, it doesnt go to the root of the problem.
There is another way. Where emotions are energy, connected to situations in the past, where you have once experienced these emotions.
The emotions have become part of who you are and the pain or fear can cause the anxiety. By going back to the memory, or the emotion, depends on the person and the situation, it is possible to take away the excess of energy, the emotion. The memory will stay and part of the process is to analyze the situation, learn from it and turn it into something you can learn from.
The emotions are gone and will not be triggered every time the same situation comes along.
