Don't be afraid to press charges.
Hello,
I am a rape survivor.
I thought I should share it here.
The abuse really changed my life forever. I was a carefree, joyful, party girl before the incident. After the heavy week, it was the only way to relax during the weekends. But now I recovering from my depression.
One night after returning home from a pub it happened. Someone from the pub followed me and assaulted me. After reaching home I didn't know what to do? I was still in the shock. I didn't want to report it. I thought I would be ridiculed by the police and court. I was afraid everyone would point it's my fault it happened. Three days later, I told it to my friend, and she forced me to press charges against the man. After all the ordeal, I got justice.
I learnt that in Ontario, women get rape shield law, it prevents the defendant from using our sexual history to attack our credibility. You can read about it here. (
http://www.defencegroup.ca/blog/in-the-news/what-is-a-rape-shield-law/ ) There will be many women out there who will be shy to report rape fearing the defendant would use her sexual history to deny justice. Remember, only if you report the cases, the culprits can be punishment and these incidents can be stopped.
Now, I'm a little paranoid and never goes out alone. I'm under therapies to regain my confidence.
