After 6 months I think i'm healing. Hope this can help someone too
Hi. Like many of you I too am suffering from this peeling lip condition and i hope what i outline here can help somebody. Disclaimer: what is causing my lips to peel may not be what is causing yours but i'm sure many of you know about the desperation of trying everything and just wanting to see results. I am going to outline what i did in detail and will update as i go through this process.
It all started one morning after cleaning some mold off of my wall. A dry patch of flaking in my middle lower lip which i thought was just a normal peel so i took some sugar, honey and a toothbrush and attempted exfoliating thinking that would fix the issue. My lips looked red and i thought ok i'll put on some lip balm and this will heal... it didn't. Over the the next few weeks it spread throughout the bottom lip and then i got the dreaded triangle on my top lips. It seemed like everyday it was getting worse. Bathing and brushing teeth became horrible and something i had to do way in advance before leaving home to go to class because the lips became white when in contact with water and would come off easily if disturbed. I was going crazy trying to figure it out. I went to google and found the name. visited a doctor and her first guess was a vitamin deficiency which she said she had only seen with angular cheilitis, but i clearly didn't have angular it was on the lips itself which she found strange. She prescribed some iron and becoplex tablets to see if itwould help. unfortunately nada. I visited more doctors and i got a variety of speculations, oh allergy maybe, take some allergra, not enough water drinking, don't drink cows milk, use parrfin oil, use vaseline. I tried it all and daily it got worse. I found this forum and desperately read through hundreds of posts when i should have been studying but i was desperate to find a cure.
I was guilty of peeling of the thick scabs to go out in public to appear somewhat normal. like if i simply was weatring a stain on my lips.that was a horrible idea. the exposed skin became prone to infection so i developed a bacterial infection on top of having exfoliative chelitis about 3 months after it started. I got rid of the infection by using an antibacterial zinc ointment Bacitrcin, thinking maybe i might have impetigo that just progressed and this would help. I got rid of the infection but the peeling still continued. By this point i had no normal skin left on my lips. the entire thing was peeling. I started using things that worked for others, to combat both the infection and the peeling: applecider vinegar, aquaphor, blistex, getting more sunlight, liver flush, anti candida diet, aloe vera gel, exercise, taking a seabath(I live in the Caribbean), probiotics . Nothing really showed much improvement.
I decided to try one more doctor and I think i finally found the answer. She did some tests and i described everything to her, my mold experience, everything i tried and how frustrated i was. Turns out according to her tests I have deficiencies in the following vitamins A, B6, C, E and my iron and zinc levels were low. She said most likely the stress of school was depleting my store of vitamins and honeslty in university your diet isn't the best so any multivitamin or becoplex that i was prescribed wouldn't have been enough for my body's needs.
Vitamins and minerals work in tandem with each other and a deficiency in B6 is known to result in peeling and inflammed lips. Thinking back on it one post i read somebody claimed getting more vitamins from drinking milk daily cured her. So i took her advice because what do i really have to lose by taking some vitamins. I'm currently taking B 100, 300mg of vit C, 50mg zinc, E 400 and 5ml of an iron supplement on a daily basis and i still moisturise my lips 3 times a day with blistex. It's only been a week but i am seeing some kind of improvement. the lines in my lips are finally returning after months of them being gone. The buildup is less. I am finally getting some hope of having normal lips again.
Again, this is what is currently working for me. If you don't have any known allergies and you've tried antibacterial and antifungal ointments and creams and seen no improvement and nothing seems to be working after trying something for about 2 or 3 weeks, try asking a doctor to check your vitamin levels and see if that can be the answer for you too. Hope this can help someone and we can cure our peeling lips.
