Taurine helps detoxification in those with CBS upregulations
I have an up-regulation in my CBS (cystathionine-beta-synthase) gene that means I make lots of taurine instead of glutathione and waste a lot of methylation nutrients and produce
sulfites instead. It's a pretty shitty thing to have and one that I hold responsible for a lot of my health problems.
It became most noticeable to me when supplementing with a high quality liposomal glutathione depleted all my other B vitamins rather quickly and then again when combining both B vitamins and glutathione gave me a sulfur toxicity: low stomach acid, a kind of strange whole body pain, and a nose bleed associated with anemia. Very unpleasant.
(You can read about all this in Amy Yasko's book Pathways to Recovery.)
Anyway, it occurred to me one day that supplementing with taurine might be useful to help retrain my body in some way that I already have enough taurine and to make glutathione instead and help recycle methylation nutrients as they are supposed to be. This is total speculation but I think I'm going to give it a go. I've taken taurine a few times and I doesn't seem to give me any additional calming effect which either means I'm not absorbing it or my body responding by not producing any more of it. Hopefully this means glutathione is being made instead.
