Hydrogen Rich Water
This is a relatively new health protocol that I ran across several months ago and have been researching and partaking in since. It is simply drinking hydrogen rich water, which is water with dissolved hydrogen gas (H2) in it. I haven't found much on it on the alt-health sites I checked and only a reference or two here on CZ from years ago. (Saw Dr. Hyashi's sticks mentioned 8 years ago...these don't really work that well but he still seems to be selling them after all this time.) H2 was thought to be inert in the body until 35 or so years ago and didn't really attract much attention until a study in 2007 showed it to be a "novel antioxidant" (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3257754/) Since then it has been researched quite a lot with 600+ peer-reviewed studies published showing it effective treating over 150 problematic conditions in the body. As far as why it hasn't attracted more attention with the alt-health people...I'm still a little puzzled about that. I think possibly it's because only the water machine makers have latched onto it as a selling point and now promote their levels of H2 in their alkaline, structured, or whatever-it-is they're touting as their technology water. The concentrations of H2 that the machine makers achieve are relatively modest (~1.0 ppms H2 at best for most) and while this may achieve some benefits, it's really higher concentrations that are used in most of the studies. Also, the machines that obtain even these concentrations are pricey...$2k+...and the machines carry the baggage of years of hype with little proven results. With the discovery that dissolved H2 is most likely the ONLY factor that made this water healthful, that may change as they improve their technology to produce it. There's a website,
http://www.molecularhydrogenfoundation.org/
which is a great place to start if you want to research this technology further. I found it several months ago and got very enthusiastic about trying it out. Check out the video there of Tyler LeBaron presenting at a conference last year as well as any studies that may relate to your particular health challenges, if any. It seems that practically all systems and organs in our body are helped by H2 molecules passing through.
Well, I wasn't going to fork over $2k to try an unproven (at least to me) technology. There are various pill makers that sell a standard formula pill (at $1/pill) which claim to produce therapeutic doses of H2 water. I bought a bottle and tried it and found it does get about .5ppms of H2 concentrations...but not with their instructions to "simply drop it in a glass of water, wait 5 minutes and drink it." You have to use a pressurized container and basically my technique (that I'm going to share) to get even this concentration. I did notice that the standard formula was pretty simple...magnesium, malic acid, fumeric acid and mannitol. The mannitol is a binder which holds the pill together and after doing a little research on it, decided I didn't want to ingest that for any length of time. (Surprised they didn't have to put a warning on the bottle for it.) But what was generating the H2 was simply the Mg and acids reacting. So I looked on Ebay and found you could order 99.99% pure Mg rods for $3-$4 per rod and that food grade malic acid is also pretty cheap. Cutting to the chase, after a month or so of trying various containers, acids (vinegar, lemon juice, etc. will also work) number of rods, water temps, etc. I have a technique that produces 2.5-3.5 ppm H2 enriched water consistently and for ~3.4 cents/glass. This is definitely a good therapeutic dose of H2 water and certainly better than anything currently on the market. I have been drinking 60-75oz of this water for almost 2 months now and the benefits I've noticed are unmistakable. Aches and pains I thought were inevitable with aging (I'm 72) have pretty much all disappeared...no doubt the anti-inflammatory effects, stamina for sports activities has increased, an afib condition I seemed to get occasionally has disappeared, and my brain is working better. Certainly some of these improvements could be explained by simply getting hydrated, the Mg supplementation I'm now getting (more about that later) or possibly even the malic acid supplementation, which is supposed to be good for fibromyalgia. But I tend to think it's the H2 dissolved in the water responsible for most of the benefits. Btw, I happen to use distilled water for this because that is my standard drinking water (sometimes making high Zeta out of it) but it will work with whatever you happen to use.
A caveat about the Mg supplementation inherent in this technique: The basic formula from high school chemistry is Metal + acid --> H2 + Salt of the metal. In this case the salt is Mg Malate, which is water soluble and is a good Mg supplement. However it's possible to get too much of this when supplementing. The first sign of possible overload of Mg is diarrhea and I would occasionally get some loose bowels when I exceeded 75oz or so of this per day. I would just back off some when this happened and it would clear up. I approximated that I could be getting as much as 150-200mg of Mg per 15
oz of this water based on Mg rod weight loss so 5 glasses of this would give me up to 1000mg/day. This is a lot and I caution anyone starting this to do your own research, check with your doctor regarding the safety of supplementing Mg, etc. particularly if your kidneys are compromised in any way and don't filter optimally.
Anyway, I recently put up a video on youtube showing this technique. The major drawback of getting started right away should you choose to try it is the length of time it takes to get the rods from China. I've ordered 3 different times and the soonest I got them was about 3 weeks (from AliExpress, I think) and the longest was about 7 weeks from an Ebay seller. If someone wants to order a bunch on Aliexpress, mark them up a little and sell them on Ebay with 2 day shipping, that might be a good idea. (Not my cup of tea.) If anyone finds a faster way, please post it!
