Wet underneath crust

Anyone else noticed when you remove the crust after leaving it on for a couple of weeks, it's wet & sticky underneath. It's a light yellowish color with a strong smell. What's the reason for the liquid?
Is the crust just a protective barrier to cover up a f***ed up wound or is it just dead skin piling up like crazy? I need to understand why our lips are doing what it's doing. Tweet
