Re: Can Iodine Cause Hashimoto's?

Stargazer,

You bring up a very valuable question that I have been very concerned about since first learning about Iodine several years ago.

Fortunately, for most of us taking iodine, the worst that happens is some degree of detox symptoms, even for those who follow the advice of Trapper & the VWT forum to start with 100mg iodine.

However it is indisputable that some people do suffer from rare reactions to iodine, and discussions of these reactions are avoided at VWT. Why scare people in the forum about rare reactions?

I have finally found the answers to these reactions which include:
* Hashimotos
* Hot Nodules
* Hyperthyroid
* Thyroid Firestorm

These rare reactions occur in people who are already hypothyroid and start Iodine with the co-supplements. Even within this group, the rare reactions do not occur because selenium is taken with iodine. The KEY word here is selenium. Selenium is just as vital to the thyroid as iodine.

The solution to preventing these rare reactions is to take selenium for 2 weeks or more before starting iodine. To be on the safe side, anyone who is hypothyroid should begin with selenium & co-supplements for 2 or more weeks before starting iodine, and then start with a small dosage of iodine.

I have the complete details documented here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1751jwypZ4nugKFA3Nk4PJ2MgDbnrVz5an3c76C7hdok/edit?pli=1#
This details what to do about Hashi, nodules & hyperthyroid.

In defense of Trapper & the VWT Group, Iodine supplements provide far more amazing beneficial results than rare hashimotos & Hot Nodule reactions. The list of beneficial results from iodine are breath taking.

And then once the rare condition is discovered, we know now what to do for treatment, per the above Hashimoto link. Basically treat with selenium and a few other things until the anti-body testing comes back normal. For more on the Thyroid antibody, see "Stop the Thyroid Madness"

Hope this helps,
Grizz
