Is it safe and worthwhile to take pharmaceutical anti-hypertensives?

Hi, I have high blood pressure. My BP is 150/100. I have been told many times that I aught to be on (pharmaceutical) anti hypertensives. However, I have heard bad things about these medications. I have also heard something to the effect, "people who took anti hypertensives had no fewer strokes than those who did not".

What do people think? Should I go on this type of medication. I do suffer from alcoholism; and I do take many, many supplements (pills).

Thanks!
