Root canal done : damage done? Or damage reversible?

If one has a root canal which has been started in August last year and was finally filled with Guterpercha etc in November:
is the damage already done?

I mean of course its still better to get it removed now than in 10 years.

But i was wondering how long it takes for toxic protein stuff, poison out of sealer/guterpercha etc to cause damage.

Hours? Days? Weeks?

or all dependant on the individual immune system?
