The ripples in your diagram are caused by the instantaneous algebraic sum of the component sine waves. They are present whenever sine waves of different frequencies combine, no matter what the harmonic relationships, phase angles or sources of the waves.
Ringing is an actual resonance effect (as opposed to 99% of resonancey things discussed in these forums). It is caused (in this case) by the passing back and forth of quanta of electromagnetic energy between two types of electromagnetic storage components whose current vectors are 180 degrees out of phase with each other (relative to the voltage vector of either one) in the complex s-plane.
