I agree SayWhat. There are many people right now sitting in church or not, thinking they are saved because they thought their works or the title "christian family" applied to their salvation. There is a scripture in the bible in Acts 16:31 that says, They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."
Now some may think that this means that the rest of your family will be saved at the same time, but all we have to do is read the rest of the bible to know that this is not how this is to be understood. It's an individual walk. However, I do think being raised in a christian family does expose us (if it's not a cult) to the teaching and thus we "hear" the word and can at some point in our lives receive the meaning as we grow and become fertile soil in the hands of an Almighty God.
For each person will look back at their past lives and see a trail of what went wrong if they study it carefully. Some people may have hurt or betrayal...perhaps indifference...and others, just plain defiance to why they did not allow the Holy Spirit to enter their hearts when they heard the message. Others heard the wrong message...but you are right it's an individual journey for each person. For me it was blaming the church. Once I left the church and through personal hardships I came to find the Lord on my own, I realized I was blaming all the things that were good in my life and not looking at my own lack of journey.
Looks like God has placed a burden on your heart for such people. That is good.
