Randolph Stone's protocol uses a concoction to increase the production of bile from the liver. Substances that do this are called choleretics and olive oil which contains oleic acid is a very effective choleretic. It is mixed with a citric acid to form an emulsion otherwise the olive tends to sit in the stomach.Fennel seed is a proven choleretic, stimulating bile production. Adding Epsom Salts to the protocol introduces a cholagogue. A bitter substance that will contract the gallbladder. Even a teaspoon in a small cup of warm water is sufficient to do this. After the gallbladder contracts it will refill with bile rich in bile salts from the liver. Epson slats has the added advantage that the magnesium relaxes the muscles of valve of the valves that control bile flow allowing more to flow.

Epson salts is sometimes known as a lithogogue or stone expulsion substance.

There is third factor to take into account because biliary problems are very commonly associated with inflammation in the bile ducts and gallbladder.
