Is it safe to alternate between magnesium citrate and magnesium taurate?

Hi ! I would like to know if One can alternate magnesium taurate and magnesium citrate ? You see back in March , my dad started taking magnesium citrate for his asthma and constipation... Then he stumbled on an article somewhere in Google about magnesium taurate being helpful to treat Depression so we ordered some magnesium taurate...he has been taking it for a week but he noticed that his bowel movements have been strained...so he wants to know if it's safe to alternate dosages of magnesium citrate and magnesium taurate?
