It was because the copper wire was for arts and crafts purposes and had some coating on it.

It probably only worked for me before because I had inadvertently scraped off some of the coating on all the ends, and then when I adjusted the plates I must've messed it up.

So now I have it set up with proper electrical wire and it's working fine.
