I am a long-time sufferer of IBS who is now cured thanks to FMT ( Fecal Microbiota Transplant ) !



I am a biology teacher, wife, and expectant mother (finally!) who suffered from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) for just over 6 years with constant pain, fatigue, three years of diarrhea, and three years of constipation up until five months ago. My friend acted as my fecal microbiota donor and since 2 weeks post-treatment I have been pain free and (dare I say it?) cured! I tried just about everything before FMT (bowel muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories, Antibiotics , antimicrobial herbs (oregano, garlic, etc.), probiotics, fasting, and too many diet restrictions to count. My life has changed in innumerable ways, the best of which are not being in constant pain and having the energy to enjoy life. I am doing this AMA to spread the word about this new therapy and to promote the idea (and hopefully future studies) of FMT for IBS patients (not just c. difficile, which is most studies have focused on so far). I am NOT your doctor and I had several indicators that this would work for me while it might not for everyone who has IBS (notably, I always responded to Antibiotics ).

This is a picture of a few of the left over prescription bottles I have that I used both for the FMT and before for the IBS. The rifampin and metronidazole were for the pre-FMT protocol ( Antibiotics that helped wipe out my "bad bacteria" before being replaced by the good ones during the FMT procedure). I also included the Erythromycin (for bowel stimulation, to fight constipation) and another for colon muscle spasms (which did nothing to help).
