TSH not only stimulate thyroid hormone production but also helps stimulate production of the Iodine transport cells. (ie sodium-iodide symporter-NIS). You need adequate NIS for Iodine to be able to do its job.
Whats really sad is the doc is apparently clueless about normal body function but I bet s/he could rattle off a book full of pharmaceutical drugs and their uses...... sad times.
