Re: Iodine History: Iodized Cigarettes
Thanks Grizz. :) And YOU are amazing for keeping the io-light burning brightly! Thank you for all you do, and have done:)
Shortly after we started this forum in '07, the DEA made it illegal to purchase
Lugol's 5% in quantities greater than 1 oz:

The reason being that
Iodine is used in methamphetamine production. Never mind that a lot of substances are used in metamphetamine production, the DEA chose to target iodine, an element vital for health.
Let's also ignore the fact that thousands die each year at the hands of doctors and pharmaceutical companies marketing their FDA approved drugs.
For those of us that had recently rediscovered iodine, this ruling was shocking and smacked of conspiracy. The same government that recommends water fluoridation and allows the usage of brominated flour in foodstuffs makes
Iodine purchase in quantity illegal?
Iodine has been through several cycles since discovery. It went from being a God-send, a cure-all, to purportedly causing disappearing breasts and testicles. It was purportedly used to commit suicide, mainly by young "hysterical" women, in the 1920s. Never mind that these young women... recovered. And never mind that the
Iodine they probably consumed was a tincture meant for topical application only. It was mandated in the 60s that each and every slice of commercially baked bread contain 150mcg iodine... ? Why?
The history of iodine is full of confusion and contradiction. The problem that I see with human perception is that we have no sense of history. The truths of the past are stifled in the cacophony of the now. I hope to bring some of these voices of the past to you.
“Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.”
My interpretation of that quote is that unless we pay attention to the voices of our forebears WITHOUT our present-day reality filters on we will continue to being led by the authority of the now. And "now" does not have our best interests at heart. Not by a long shot.
Iodine is gaining acceptance now. That was not the case when we started this forum. I remember researching in the early days and being frightened by the warnings all over the web. There was precious little good info. I am grateful to have been part of the team to report on the immeasurable value of iodine...
I'm passionate because iodine supplementation most likely saved my life. I'm also passionate because it seemed as though iodine was being taken away from us with the DEAs '07 ruling...
I could go on and on about this... but I won't(now). I will leave you with this:
Szent Georgi, M.D., Ph.D., who discovered vitamin C and won a Nobel Prize, regularly took over a gram of
Iodide to keep himself healthy. In his day physicians were taught: “If you don't know where, what or why, prescribe ye then K and I [potassium iodide].”
