What to take for sleep?

Hello,

I have been dealing with severe adrenal exhaustion for a long time and one thing that doesn't seem to improve is sleep. I feel much better during the day when I can get a decent night's sleep of at least 8 hours without constantly waking up, but it rarely happens. I've tried all kinds of pharmaceutical meds and natural herbs/hormones. I currently take melatonin 3 mg, but it only gets me to sleep but I end up waking up a couple of times in the middle of the night in horror and in pain and it takes me hours to get back to sleep.

I've tried klonopin, rozerem ( which is basically a melatonin receptor drug which works to regulate circardian rhythm, but it completely knocked me out the next day and made me even weaker). Klonopin helps me to a certain degree not to wake up in the middle of the night too often but I'm afraid of developing tolerance to benzos as I heard it can be hard coming off. I don't take it more than 4 days at a time. Should I avoid benzos all together? I'm kind of running out of options at this point and might decide that it's just worth it to take it in order to REST my body b/c that's what it's really LACKING in order to properly reset my autonomic nervous system and hpa axis. But could benzos potentially destroy my autonomic nervous system and hpa axis further? I'm stuck in a real dilemma.

Any advice and/or recommendations on this would be greatly appreciated.
