Dental Health & Nutrition
TIPS TO PREVENT DENTAL DISEASE & TOOTH DECAY:
-Read the nutrition facts and ingredients on food labels. Try to find the product with the least amount of
Sugar and stay away from foods such as soft drinks, juice, candy, cookies, and pastries
-Eat more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, eggs, low-fat dairy products, and drink more water. Having better nutrition helps with fighting off disease which can prevent gum disease.
-Try to eat meals that are filling instead of snacking throughout the day, but if snacks are consumed, stick to healthy foods like fruit or vegetables. Do not drink soft drinks outside of a meal because the sugars will sit on the teeth for an extended period of time, causing cavities.
-Visit the dentist every six months for a cleaning and check-up. This is the very minimal amount to prevent and catch dental disease at the earliest stage.
-Brush teeth at least twice a day for two minutes; using approved fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. This step will remove sugars and food particles from the teeth to reduce the cavity-causing acid and plaque build up.
-Floss at least once a day. Flossing will remove sugars and food particles from in between teeth, where the toothbrush doesn’t reach.
-Remember that tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral diseases are 100% preventable if the correct steps are taken.
