House Sitting
I have been living in this house for about a week, feeling profound gratitude for the opportunity to get out of apartments, especially those tiny little old roach infested ones that I can barely fit into...
And live in a really nice house for about the same price. I see it as an act of generosity on the part of the owners, who are philanthropic by nature... They could put everything in storage, move out and rent the place for $4000 per month at the very least. Instead, they simply reserve one room for their own use when they are in town, which is rarely, and rent the rest of the house for the cost of taxes and utilities, in exchange for someone to watch over the place, take care of it, and handle any house maintenance issue that come up while they are gone…
Living here for the price of a one bedroom apartment will require me to find a housemate. The search has been quite interesting. Eight people have looked so far. Five have turned up their noses at taking care of a pool or mowing the yard. Of the three who were interested in moving in, one had the audacity to ask the owner to clean out the garage, buy a pool cover, and repair the hot tub. When I am hoping they will let me put potting soil in it and plant an herb garden?!
Everyone seems to think they would be doing the owners such a great big favor to live here and take care of the place, so the rent should be much less, or better yet free!!! I am appalled at the attitudes. It is interesting to notice how the people, who seem to resent those who can afford to own houses like this, also resent the responsibility that comes with taking care of a place like this.
There is much anger in this world that despises the necessity of responsibility. I keep thinking about the song "In my father's house are many mansions"... Many of them are sitting empty because so few people are willing to help take care of them for a fair price. It is truly a pitiful situation.
