My Vagina hates me

So I've had this horrible vaginal odor and discharge for many years. The smell is sometimes fishy, sometimes garlic/onion-y. The discharge comes and goes and is worst at times.

Some Back Story:
When I was younger and began bathing myself on my own without help, my mother told me not to put soap down there because it will burn (I think she was talking about INSIDE my vagina). I took that to mean, not to wash there AT ALL (lol) so I didn't. For YEARS. After puberty, I noticed when I would be in class, a weird smell coming from between my legs but I never did anything. The smell worsened over time, and when I would use the bathroom it would smell HORRID, and stink up the whole room. It really got embarrassing when people started noticing. People at school would ask me question like "does it smell fishy in here?" I remember twice my DAD even noticed (smh).

It wasn't until one day I was at school and the smell was keeping me from concentrating so I made up my mind to go home that day and WASH MY DAMN VAG after 7-8 years. After I did it I felt so clean, and fresh and I couldn't believe how I had NO ODOR! But I couldn't help but notice that the smell would come back the next morning. I thought maybe I wasn't doing a good enough job, and so long story short: I've used soap, no soap, washing several times, wiping with wet wipes, summers eve, vagisil etc. and the smell hasn't gotten any better. I'm about to turn 20 and I REALLY REALLY want this problem fixed.

For Those Who don't want to read all of this basically:
I went 7+ years without cleaning my vagina
I've tried several diff methods of cleaning and none of them seem to work

Is this bacterial vaginosis? Should I try douching? If so, what do I douche with?
