This post was last updated 5 years ago and (though I am not an expert on medical science) I assume that there are numerous studies that will give us a more concrete overview on what kind of disease we're really battling here. As far as I know, dementia, among other ridiculously impossible diseases we can't still cure, can be treated at home. They need to be in a controlled enviroment where their actions can be moderated, be screened. A long term care facility will do just fine in taking this matter seriously; it is not cheap, yes, but an insurance to ensure the future is better than none at all.
