Food combining for optimal health

I have been reading my manual for my ayurvedic program through Sai Ayurvedic College for next month's class, which is on Ayurvedic nutrition. Tons of interesting stuff a lot of it already familiar to me. Something that was very interesting to me in this chapter was about how to properly combine foods for optimal digestion. I was already aware that fruit does not combine well with many other foods and should be eaten separately, same with milk to a lesser extent, but there was also a recommendations to not combine dense proteins with carbohydrates. I had heard of this before but never in the context of ayurveda. Since I read this, I have tried implementing it and I feel there is some merit to this. How I understand this is it is okay to have some protein in a carbohydrate meal, like rice with a small amount of dal or other beans, but not rice and chicken in the same meal. Dense proteins like meat should only be eaten together with somewhat low-carb vegetables. Seems to make sense to me that things would be easier to digest this way. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this topic with regard to ayurveda.
