Re: N-Acetylcysteine for Autism

Be careful with NAC. From my 3 yrs in the heavy metal chelation groups there is a sizable minority of toxic people who are quite sensitive to foods and supplements--including NAC--that are high in sulfur/thiols.

Some others find NAC to be useful. However, you don't necessarily have to take NAC in order to boost your cysteine level.

Andrew Cutler says alpha lipoic acid (ALA) increases thiol levels, including cysteine and glutathione. Even more importantly, ALA is a dithiol chelator of mercury and arsenic. ALA also crosses the blood brain barrier and so can move inorganic mercury across the bbb and out of the brain.

Cutler explains in this audio interview.

He comments on the Gregus study with ALA in mice. He also explains the risks of using ALA inappropriately. One group of mice ended up with *more* mercury in the brain even though they excreted more of it than controls.

Don't forget the link between autism and heavy metals.
Autism Research Institute treatment parent ratings 2009
http://www.autism.com/index.php/treatment_ratings_asd

"Detox. (chelation)" 74% report "got better", 3% report "got worse", 23% report "no effect"
The 74% rating is the best of all of the many dozens of listed interventions.
