O/T: Don't Handle Those Receipts
Sigh...this world of ours is a toxin minefield:
The next time you check out at the register and receive a thermal printed receipt, you should know that you are being exposed to an endocrine disrupting chemical that mimics estrogen in the human body. The effect of these endocrine disrupting chemicals, or EDCs, in human exposure has been associated with diminished intelligence, altered behavior and development, and decreased immunity. In animals, exposure to EDCs has been associated with reduced reproductive success, reduced survival, altered sex typing, and developmental abnormalities.
The EWG conducted an independent study in 2010 that discovered BPA on two fifths of all receipt paper. A study published in the Journal of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry found that the BPA in receipt paper transfers to the skin and can penetrate the skin to the level that it cannot be washed off. The University of Missouri Division of Biological Sciences laboratory discovered that the “total mass of BPA on a receipt is 250 to 1,000 times greater than the amount of BPA typically found in a can of food or of baby formula, or that which leaches from a BPA-based plastic baby bottle into its contents.”
