i think the most logical explanation i've heard is that the lips are trying to protect themselves due to the chronic inflammation by creating an abundance of keratin scales... the inflammation is like a fire... keep it soothed and moist, stop feeding the fire with trauma and irritants, and hopefully it will go out.
