Amalgam replacement

I have a large amalgam filling. Replacing it may cause a ruth canal job! Is it better to leave amalgam to prevnet rooth canal job or should I remove the tooth? My dentist suggested to remove a part of amalgam as much as possible and leave rest of in the tooth then fill in the tooth with a white composite. Is this a safe way of doing it? What should I do?
