Re: root canals gone bad with ill effects. getting dentures at a young age? Please help.
I have had major dental work done in the past 10 years with much of it having to be redone a couple of years later. I grind my teeth terribly at night and have crowns on all of my molars from cracking the teeth. Night guards don't really help. Anyway, I got a very expensive, very painful, time-consuming, emotion-filled implant after an abcess formed above a tooth that had a
root canal a couple of years prior. My oral surgeon assured me that the bruxism would not cause problems with it... I am so sorry I got that implant and I'm now daydreamig about dentures! I know that seems odd. No dental professional who provides implants will tell you what to expect (they make too much money on them). First of all, the procedure was incredibly painful and traumatic. Then there is the "gap" that must be left between top of implant crown and gumline. I went back to the oral surgeon after he placed the crown on the implant to complain that there was a large gap and he told me it had to be there to clean between the tooth and gumline. It CONSTANTLY gets food caught in there and is very difficult to get it out (no simple brush and floss). During dinner out with friends, food will get caught up there then just fall out while I'm talking. Also, I've had nerve damage from the surgery and I believe I have TMJ. I wish I had gotten dentures. I have more issues coming up and now I know: each procedure only lasts for a few years--the dentists won't tell you this. I never heard of having a "retreatment of a root canal" until it happened to me. And it is MUCH more expensive than the original
root canal (also keep in mind you will need a new crown each time). I live in fear of the next major dental issue and am constantly hoping I don't need more than one per year as my insurance only pays 2000.00 per year. I feel fortunate that I CAN pay for this; however, I'm not stupid and I'm careful with my money. For this reason I cannot see spending thousands and thousands of dollars for temporary fixes.
