I think you do need a biopsy or at least something like a biopsy to test for HPV, as it pretty much doesn't spread into the blood stream but stays in the affected area of the skin (at least that's what I've read and was told; it might be true for some kinds of the virus (there are like 150... "high-risk", "low-risk"...).

And yea, like doc10 said, just because people had a biopsy done, that doesn't mean that they were tested for HPV. My biopsy was definitely not tested for HPV (the results said something similar to "the area could look like a virus infection". So after my biopsy, they wanted to test for a few viruses (including HIV, HPV...). I think my derm didn't really know too much about the HPV virus, so all that was done was that they took a blood sample and sent it to a lab. The lab report said "negative" for both HPV tests, but when reading the text below, it said that they couldn't test for it because there was no testable sample (meaning they probably do need a skin sample).
