I'm pretty much in the same spot as you are right now. The puppy, the Giardia, the symptoms you describe ... yes, it's very likely you caught Giardia from your puppy. They will outgrow their susceptibility when they reach the age of two years or so. But you probably not.

I had Giardia on and off for many years; partly because of traveling all around the world, partly because I had to do with dogs for nearly 30 years. Some people live peacefully with Giardia in their intestines, but some are not; they feel "as sick as a dog". Or as the wife of my unfortunately long ago retired specialist for tropical diseases said: I felt like dying when I had Giardia.

Now, what to do? If the existence of Giardia could be established by way of stool samples, you could treat yourself by prescription drugs. Here in Europe, it would most probably be a combination of Tiberal/Zentel, with some chances of success. If there's no proof (which is most common, unfortunately), the only thing I know of that might help is Humaworm. But, in my opinion, chances are small that one round of Humaworm would take care of that. So repetitive treatments would be necessary, with all the long 3-month waits in between.

When we got our new puppy two years ago, he had tapeworm, Campylobacter and Giardia: Just what I needed. I was trying hard to recuperate from worms and Giardia at that time, and that sweet furry thing made sure it was all in vain :-). I don't blame him, how could he know?

So, first make sure that your puppy is in as good a health as ever possible (they deserve it, these sweet friends). At the same time, take care of yourself. If doctors fail you (most probably they will), resort to Humaworm. Try to contact Dr. Bailey for advice. Maybe there's more that can be done than by taking Humaworm.

My best to you and your health. And yes, any treatment against Giardia should involve your husband too. As it is easily transferred from human to human, neglecting this could result in some kind of ping-pong game: you get rid of it, but your husband may infect you again because he wasn't treated. In turn, you would re-infect him later on even if he should have been rid of the buggers in between. And so on.

Quite a funny world that, isn't it?

Oh, and I almost forgot: the palpitations, the racing heart in the middle of the night may be caused by Giardia, but worms could have the same effect. In that respect, a Humaworm treatment is very well worth trying.
