i have not really dug too deep on this story to comment with any authority... but the irony of the Gibson story apppears to be that importing the wood from india is still legal, as long as Indian labor "finished" the wood before it was shipped... so its not really protecting the environment, just protecting indian labor... so you have a situation where american law forces american companies to outsource labor to a third world country where the labor conditions are even worse than they are here.

btw, i agree with you that we all need to treat mother earth much much better...
