Re: The Fasting Truth
smashbtws,
According to all of the highly-experienced fasting supervisors that I'm aware of, fasting is a perfectly safe process as long as it's conducted under professional supervision. That might seem a contradictory statement but from my reading, fasters occasionally experience severe healing crises that can leave them needing expert assistance which might even include the intervention of a medical doctor. Their years of experience and training should make them invaluable at recognising these moments and dealing with them appropriately. If you are fasting under your own recognisance and run into one of these serious crises, regardless of how much research you've done, you might not be able to summon help or even realise that you're in danger.
For an example, an asthma sufferer who suffered a severe attack during a fast came close to passing out but he was adamant that he didn't want to medicate. Fortunately for him, he didn't pass out and eventually came out of the crisis after which, according to the tale, he never suffered from an attack again. Who knows what would have resulted if he had passed out.
A member of this forum got into a state where they couldn't hold down water or food and as such couldn't end the fast or keep it going properly. Apparently, they eventually wound up in the emergency room due to dehydration.
I recently fasted for 21 days unsupervised and it was a walk in the park but I knew that if anything did go wrong and I was unable to fend for myself, my wife would have an ambulance on site within minutes.
Having said all that, you'll see on this forum and many others that people fast frequently and often for long periods without serious problems. It took me 2 years of research before I felt confident enough to go more than 1 week and I always recommend that others do the reading first before taking the plunge. Fasting is easy part - it's ending the fast without undoing all the good work that is the hard bit!
