Interesting that in the article they state "may be the primary cause of AIDS".  Yet around that same exact time Gallo, who was a party to that study lied to the world by claiming that HTLV III, now known as HIV, was the cause of AIDS.  The government had to change the definition of AIDS to fit the virus so they could cover up Gallo's lie. Under the definition of the syndrome, not disease, AIDS at the time HIV could not cause AIDS.  But Gallo had already embarrassed the government once when he was busted for scientific fraud.  And they did not want that to occur again.  The only way out of this mess was to make the definition of AIDS fit the only thing HTLV III could do, which was to drop CD4 counts so they could honestly claim that HTLV III could cause AIDS.

Yes, Gallo was definitely responsible for a lot of people dying due to his false claim he made to push sales of his faulty antibody test he developed for the virus.
