What a bright light on a harsh reality that can be a lot better. I've been witness to this reality first hand and every point in the article is dead on. The younger ICU patients often can recover, even after being on the vent for weeks. The critically ill elderly, frequent fliers, chronic renal failures, severe strokes, and other critically fubar'd people end up living much longer, but quality is very poor. Doctors treat thousands of people and witness the high suffering rate of certain treatments. Families often don't know or want to accept someone that suddenly gets ill and about to die. They want everything done. Takes a while to sink in.
