My understanding is that symporter defects are relatively common.

It is also my understanding that they are caused by oxidative damage, thus employing C to fix the damage.

oxidizers are to blame:
mercury
lead and other heavy metals can often be the problem.

for some Vitamin C can fix it just fine
for some Iodine can fix it, just takes longer

for other, removing amalgams, and implementing oral chelation is necessary to get to the root of the problem.
